The concept of Affiliate Marketing really isn’t new; Amazon is considered as the most visible pioneer. It is believed that Amazon.com is the one who really started the affiliate marketing methods and scenes.

In July 1996, Amazon launched its programs and now counts millions of sites in its network. Although Amazon doesn’t pay as well as many of their competitors, but most affiliate marketers have at least played with Amazon’s program, because of its power to be reckoned with online.

Merchants have rushed into affiliate programs and because running their own group of affiliates required a bit of time and commitment, a third-party providers has emerged “Affiliate Networks”; Affiliate Marketing Networks play crucial role in affiliate marketing. They give a common platform to both advertisers and affiliates to come together.

There are a huge variety of affiliate networks, but three the largest and longest running networks are Linkshare and Commission Junction (CJ), and ShareASale.

Nowadays they can provide tracking, affiliate recruiting, reporting, responding to webmaster queries, cutting checks, and sending out end-of-year tax forms. They play an important role in avoiding any dispute between advertiser and the affiliate.

Since 1996, affiliate marketing has really grown. Since that long time countless companies and advertisers have now included affiliate marketing as part of their promotions’ strategy. Thousands of merchants now use affiliate marketing to make sales, track what’s happening, and pay the affiliate marketers who are bringing them new customers.
