The current era of Social marketing has started few years ago by the advent of many precious social bookmarking websites.

Before the widespread use of social networking sites (SNSs), social marketing really wasn’t a viable option for most mainstream businesses but now the popularity of social networking sites like MySpace, Bebo, Tagged, Facebook, etc… has made social networking and social marketing very popular.

From 1997 to 2001, a number of community tools began supporting various combinations of profiles and publicly articulated Friends. They allowed users to create personal, professional, and dating profiles—users could identify Friends on their personal profiles without seeking approval for those connections.

Year 2003 saw the launch of a number of social networking sites. Most of them were more profile centric, trying to replicate the early success of Friendster. While socially-organized Social Network Sites (SNSs) seek broad audiences, professional sites such as LinkedIn focus on business people.

The social bookmarking market was first dominated by del.icio.us and StumbleUpon. These leaders split the market, del.icio.us built a hierarchy system for people to browse, while StumbleUpon was more of a random discovery system, and a unique way to make friends all over the world through a well organized channels and tags.

After that the emergence of an endless number of social network sites have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated these sites into their daily practices.

Nowadays, people not only use social bookmarking for saving and categorizing resources and references, but they take advantage of social bookmarking web of social connections, using it as a vessel for online marketing for a lot of online businesses, which is proving to be a very effective tool. People also use social bookmarking as a means to improve and boost their site’s traffic, as well as a way to improve their ranking in search engines.
