Effective business owners have a deep and thorough understanding of the nature and direction of their business. To this end, they clearly articulate the vision they have for their business within the framework of the small business plan. Everyone in the business understands the business plan. Everyone knows what their roles, responsibilities and accountabilities are in bringing about the results that have been spelled out for achieving the vision of the business.

Writing a sound business plan appears to be a daunting task at a first glance; but it becomes a piece of cake if you are armed with right set of tips. Here we can offer some of these priceless basics and tactics:

- Never think of a “Business Plan” as a document that is written once in order to attract an investor, once the business is funded, the business plan is no longer needed.

The reality is that the business plan should be used as the guiding document of your business and be reviewed regularly to help refresh the goals of your business because things change during the progress of a business.

- Weave your plan around your rivals’ weak points; but highlight your strengths. At the same time emphasize on your tricks to lure your customers.

- A business plan must convey the understanding of the entrepreneur. If you do not understand or convey what you are planning, how will you achieve your goals and succeed with your business?

- Add a lifestyle component to your business plan. Nobody cares for your lifestyle except YOU. Add a lifestyle page to your business plan. At a minimum, include how many hours you want to work, where you want to work, how much vacation you’d like and what schedule you want.

- For each strategy you have in your long-term business plan, write a short-term action plan. Include what the actual activity will be, what resources you need to do it (employees, money, time, equipment, etc) and write out a detailed plan for it including deadlines.
